The Lost Empire Hidden Beneath the Jungles of Cambodia for 1,000 Years
In April 2012, a helicopter flew low over a mountain in northern Cambodia, firing pulses of laser light down through the jungle canopy. When the data was processed, everyone in the room went silent. Beneath a thousand years of vines, trees, and monsoon rain was an entire lost city. Streets in perfect grids. Reservoirs the size of small lakes. Temples, palaces, residential blocks, and waterways spreading for kilometers in every direction. Its name was Mahendraparvata — the first capital of the Khmer Empire, founded in 802 AD by King Jayavarman II. Sixty kilometers from Angkor Wat. Two million tourists every year had been walking right past it without knowing. This documentary tells the full story of how lidar revealed a vanished empire — one that, at its peak, was more populous, more engineered, and more connected than medieval Europe. An empire of perhaps four million people, ruled from cities built around water mastery a thousand years before modern urban planning, and then erased almost completely by climate, drought, flood, and invasion. It also explores how the same technology is now rewriting the past across the world — uncovering tens of thousands of unknown Maya structures in Guatemala, Ciudad Blanca in Honduras, and entire pre-Columbian civilizations beneath the Amazon canopy. In this video: — How lidar works and why it can see through jungle canopy — Mahendraparvata — the first Khmer capital, founded by Jayavarman II in 802 AD — The 2012 and 2015 Damian Evans lidar surveys that changed Khmer archaeology — The hydraulic mastery that fed a million-person city at Angkor — What climate data tells us about the fourteenth-century collapse — Why lidar is now revealing lost civilizations in Guatemala, Honduras, and the Amazon — What other cities may still be hiding beneath the world's forests Important note: This video presents documented archaeological research, peer-reviewed lidar surveys, and ongoing scholarly debate. Speculative ideas — including alternative population estimates and unconfirmed sites — are clearly framed as open questions or working hypotheses, not as proven facts. No claim is made about extraterrestrial origins or supernatural causes.
