Why each Mega Man always loses their stuff

Some series are purely gameplay focused and players have to suspend their disbelief when it comes to Samus somehow losing all her upgrades in the day between Metroid 2 and Super Metroid. Capcom has always paid much more attention to series canon however. So what reasons have they given for a Mega Man losing all of the equipment from the last game? And what reasons make sense for the Mega Men they have said nothing about to lose their gear?
