ROCK HISTORY CLEM CATTINI Episode Two
Clem Cattini is one of the most prolific and influential drummers in British popular music, a quiet architect behind the sound of the 1960s and 1970s. Born Clemente Anselmo Cattini in North London in 1937, he first emerged during the rock ’n’ roll boom, quickly becoming a key figure in the UK’s developing pop and beat scenes. Although he began his musical life as a trumpet player, he shifted to drums as skiffle and early rock took hold, discovering an instinctive feel for rhythm that would define his career. Cattini first came to prominence as the drummer for Johnny Kidd & the Pirates, playing on the classic 1960 UK No. 1 hit “Shakin’ All Over.” His sharp, driving beat and flawless timing helped give the song its distinctive menace and power, and it remains one of the era’s most recognisable British rock recordings. After leaving the Pirates, Cattini became a founding member of The Tornados, the instrumental group best known for the global hit “Telstar” in 1962. The record became the first UK single to reach No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard chart, cementing the group’s place in pop history and forever tying Cattini to one of the most important instrumental tracks of the early 1960s. Yet Cattini’s deepest legacy lies not in one band, but in his extraordinary work as a session drummer. From the mid-1960s onward, he became a first-call percussionist for British producers, contributing to over forty UK No. 1 singles—a staggering achievement that arguably makes him the most recorded drummer in British chart history. His session credits include work with The Kinks, Tom Jones, Lulu, Cliff Richard, Herman’s Hermits, and Marc Bolan, as well as countless appearances on recordings by pop, rock, and easy-listening artists across decades. Cattini’s style emphasises clarity, consistency, and musicality rather than virtuoso flash. He has a remarkable ability to serve the song, adjusting his touch and tone to fit whatever the producer requires. This versatility made him invaluable during an era when British studios were turning out rapid-fire pop hits, and his work often went uncredited despite its centrality to the finished recordings. Even into the 21st century, Cattini has remained active, appearing at events celebrating Britain’s musical heritage and continuing to record and perform. His career stands as a testament to the often-invisible musicians whose skill shaped an entire era of British pop. The British Music Vault, collaboration with The Rock History project. We are extremely proud of this project in tribute to the memory of Mark Rye, founder of RockHistory.co.uk In 2003 Mark started the Rock History project, when the death of Pink Floyd’s manager Steve O’Rourke made him realise that memories from the golden age of British music were disappearing. Rock History is a social and music history storytelling project created by Mark Rye, devoted to collecting the stories and anecdotes about all those fabulous British bands and the business, from the birth of Skiffle and Rock’n’Roll through to the 1990s. Sadly Mark Rye passed away in 2018 and his family have been exploring ways to make the full archive accessible to all, a fitting legacy to this important project which Mark spent the last 10 years of his life pursuing. The British Music Vault will work in partnership with Mark’s family to preserve and present ‘The Mark Rye Archives’, as a dedicated channel, within the British Music Vault. Over time the full interviews recorded by Mark, (circa 300) will be available to all, for free, for research, for generations to come. About Mark Rye This heartfelt obituary details Mark’s life and journey through the music industry. https://www.theguardian.com/music/201...
