Why Biblical Fasting Unlocks Breakthrough Christians Never See

This video explains biblical fasting for beginners—what fasting means in Hebrew and Greek Scripture, the types of fasts the Bible describes, why God’s people fasted, and how to begin fasting for a spiritual purpose rather than as a diet or empty ritual.Biblical fasting is voluntarily abstaining from food for a defined spiritual purpose. The study opens with Mordecai in sackcloth in Susa during Esther’s crisis, then covers the words tsom and nesteia, the one Torah-commanded fast on the Day of Atonement, normal, absolute, and partial fasts, five biblical reasons people fasted, Jesus’s teaching in the Sermon on the Mount, Isaiah 58’s correction of empty fasting, and a clear beginner's path for first-time practice. What's covered in this video: Mordecai stands outside the palace in Susa in sackcloth and ashes while Esther faces Haman’s decree against the Jewish people. The Hebrew word tsom means to cover the mouth or restrain from food, and the Greek nesteia is built from a root meaning not to eat. Leviticus 16 commands the only Torah-required fast on Yom Kippur, when Israel was told to “afflict your souls” with the verb anah, tied to the covering of sin. A normal fast abstains from food but not water, including Jesus’s forty days in the Judean wilderness in Luke 4. An absolute fast abandons food and water, as with Moses on Mount Sinai in Deuteronomy 9 and Esther’s three-day call in Esther 4 for the Jews in Shushan. A partial fast simplifies diet, as when Daniel in Daniel 10 ate no pleasant food, meat, or wine for three weeks—the root of the Daniel fast. People fasted in mourning and repentance, including David in 2 Samuel 12 and the king of Nineveh in Jonah 3. The church at Antioch fasted before the Holy Spirit set apart Barnabas and Saul in Acts 13. Daniel’s partial fast aligns with the messenger delayed twenty-one days by the prince of the kingdom of Persia. Jesus’s forty-day fast in Matthew 4 prepares Him for ministry before He preaches or works a miracle. Anna serves in the temple with fasting and prayers in Luke 2, and Cornelius is fasting in Acts 10 when the gospel opens to the Gentiles. In Matthew 6, Jesus says “when you fast,” not “if,” and commands secrecy before the Father rather than Pharisee-style public display. Isaiah 58 defines the fast God chooses as loosening oppression, sharing bread, housing the poor, and covering the naked. Beginners are guided to start small, name a spiritual purpose, keep the fast private, and use medical caution when needed.
