Darkthrone - Quintessence (Acoustic Cover by Leiv Reed)

I was finally able to find time to work on my rendition of ‘Quintessence’ by Darkthrone. A song that might sound easier than it actually is, and this is maybe one the things I enjoy when trying to break these black metal songs apart and put them together again. They are always filled with little subtle moves and quirks. I have a feeling the original may have improvising, and I am also fascinated by the drums that varies so much in tempos all the way through the song. Starting off at a steady and calm beat, and after the bridge it slows down even more. And the vocals by Nocturno Culto. They must have been a first take, and it seems like he wasn’t really sure about how to phrase it even. It still turned out to be a great and atmospheric song, and a great representation of Darkthrone. The truest of them all. My version is done much the same was my other acoustic black metal songs, in my special “g minor” tuning (actually F minor for this one), two more or less dubbed guitars, and my attempts to create a not too cheesy vocal melody for it.
