When Humboldt—German explorer, humanist, and naturalist—arrived in America in 1800 and ventured into our Orinoco River, he discovered the poetry of nature, the fierce struggle of species for light, the magnificence of that virgin geography, the countless caimans and capybaras floating in its waters that had to be pushed aside to bathe. He crossed the rapids where he almost lost his life. A jaguar approached him, and he managed to escape because the indigenous people had already taught him the strategy. Humboldt experienced wonder, fascination. The invasion of the soul that the Amazon produces with its vastness, its greenery, and its oxygen. And he wrote it all down in his diaries and in the letters he sent to Europe. The first human being to infuse nature with poetry, and the first European to admire the indigenous people for their profound understanding of nature. That is the fascination the Amazon holds for every human being who visits it, as soon as they venture into its black stones that are mountains, there since the origin of the world because they are part of the Guiana Shield. The father river, the extraordinary Orinoco, not entirely navigable due to the rapids of Atures and Maipures, which many nevertheless dare to cross with the skill honed over years of navigating them. That is what I want to tell you. That is why we went in the summer, so you can see the Orinoco at its lowest level, with its inner workings exposed and the immense expanses of beaches. So you can also visit its indigenous market, because there all the ethnic groups that inhabit it express themselves by showcasing their gastronomy, the products of their gardens, the flavors that nourish them daily. The ancestral traditions. And to show you that Humboldt wasn't the only one captivated in 1800—more than a century later—I spoke with Adrianna González, who, after a horrific accident in which she suffered burns over 70% of her body and nearly died, losing her husband and leaving her four children with burns, decided to stay in the Amazon because she knows she'll never find that profound solidarity anywhere else. Because the air of these lands makes people generous. And if Javier Vielma, who arrived from Mérida 30 years ago, dedicated himself to exploring it, guiding those who came, wearing out his soles to hop among the rocks like the Piaroa people, and even though his wife and children have left, he remains in his Amazon, attached to his river and his jungle. And if Fathima of the Amazon—as her father named her—understood in her thirties that her life's mission is to showcase her land, and she does so through her social media. With this episode, I want to convince humanity to return to our Amazon. Take advantage of the fact that there are now two flights and you can go away for the weekend. Make tourism a source of income again for this state where the regime imposed the mine and where the guerrilla operates with impunity.
