"Aloha ‘Oe" - Cover by Becky Foster This song tells of two lovers bidding farewell in a fond embrace, and is the most famous composition by Hawai'i’s last monarch Queen Lili’uokalani. In 1878, prior to becoming queen, princess Lili’uokalani went horseback riding at Boyd Ranch. When she and her friends were heading back, Colonel James Boyd was called back and received a lei from one of the Hawaiian girls standing at the gate. The princess witnessed this tender parting, and was so touched that she began humming this melody. She borrowed the melody from the American ballad “The Rock Beside The Sea,” by Charles Converse, and the chorus from George Frederick Root's, “There’s Music in the Air,” and adapted them to Hawaiian lyrics. The next day she wrote down her humming to writing, with an English translation. This love song was first introduced to the American Public by the Royal Hawaiian Band in San Francisco in 1883. It soon became hugely popular, and is the best known of all Hawaiian melodies. I have had the privilege of living on the beautiful island of Oahu for the last couple of years, and have witnessed first-hand the love, friendship and aloha of the people here. Unfortunately my time has come to move back to the mainland. As I bid farewell to the many friends and memories I’ve made, and watch my children in tears as they say their goodbyes to their dear friends, I decided to share my version of this song. With much reverence, respect, gratitude and love, here is “Aloha ‘Oe,” filmed at Koalua Beach Park, Oahu.
