Karl-Wilhelm Rave from Schleswig-Holstein has been working with biogas since 2000 and built his own 500 kW biogas plant in 2006. Around 10,000 tons of silage are needed annually – grass silage, corn silage, and various mixtures. However, the strong winds in northern Germany caused major problems with covering the silage with silage film. Following a recommendation from an acquaintance, Karl-Wilhelm finally tested an unconventional solution: dense sowing with forage rye instead of silage film. The result is absolutely brilliant. The rye's root network perfectly seals the silage pile, resulting in consistently high-quality silage while simultaneously reducing labor.
