Mark van de Wiel, principal clarinettist of the Philharmonia Orchestra and the London Sinfonietta, introduces his instrument: the basset clarinet. The basset clarinet is most notably associated with the clarinet virtuoso Anton Stadler (1753 - 1812), who was a good friend of Mozart. In fact, Mozart wrote his famous Clarinet Concerto in A major for the basset clarinet – but until its revival in the mid-20th century, the instrument was largely forgotten about.
