When temperatures drop below freezing and black ice, snow, and poor visibility catch drivers off guard, it's one of the busiest times of the year for the tow truck crews at the Maschen interchange. At this traffic junction in the Harburg district, two of the busiest highways in Northern Germany intersect. Here, Ralf Hartmann and his team are responsible for ensuring clear and safe passage and assisting those whose vehicles have broken down or been involved in accidents. The tow truck crews never know what the day will bring, especially in winter: malfunctioning electronics in electric cars, drivers who have filled up with the wrong fuel, and also trucks and cars involved in accidents, whose drivers were caught off guard by the sudden onset of winter. These are emergencies where they need to be on the scene quickly and provide assistance. Ralf Hartmann and his four employees not only have to move the damaged vehicles off the road and to safety while traffic continues to flow, but also ensure that passing vehicles can safely navigate the accident sites. Because distractions can be dangerous at high speeds on the highways at the Maschen interchange, not only for passing vehicles but also for the tow truck drivers themselves.
