Cité Radieuse : Comment Le Corbusier a réussi là où tous les autres ont échoué ?
Marseille, 1952. It raises so many questions that the locals call it “the Madman’s House.” Seventy years later, people from all over the world travel to see it. How did a building labeled “madness” become one of the masterpieces of world architecture? And above all, why did the hundreds of buildings erected in its wake miss the mark? The answer isn’t in the concrete. It lies in what was chosen to be added to it, or removed from it. In this episode of Casa Stories, we go back to one man’s obsession, to a nearly realized utopia, and to the silent decision that changed everything. What made the Cité Radieuse indestructible, where others crumbled? It all began in a Tuscan monastery in 1907, with the obsession of a 19-year-old who was walking across Italy. His name: Le Corbusier. His project: to completely reinvent collective housing. 337 apartments. Multiple different layouts. A grocery store, a swimming pool, a school—all within the building itself. But what truly saved the Cité Radieuse wasn't the architecture. It was a decision made in an unfinished gymnasium by ordinary residents, three months after its inauguration. In this episode, we go back to the birth of a utopia and what it still tells us today about how we live together.
