And if you follow the displays of young and old alike—there are no age or gender restrictions in this market—your eyes might be drawn to a canary singing loudly in a captivating, showy manner. You might also be struck by lesser-known birds like the goldfinch, the canary, and the "misto," a hybrid between the two. A desire to learn more will lead you to ask the owners, and their answers will be varied, listing the names of birds of different shapes and colors. You'll hear familiar words and others that may be new to you: "al-walwal," "al-bouh," "al-haddad," "al-biw," "al-hazar," "qamashu," "al-watwat"... If you have little knowledge of birds, you might ask, "Is this al-walwal?" And immediately, the owner will reply, "No, this is al-ramiliya.
