Why Time Disappears When You Scroll

You open your phone for one message. When you look up, nearly an hour has passed—and you cannot identify the moment when you chose to continue. This episode separates three things we casually call “time perception”: how much time passed, how fast it felt, and how long the interval seems afterward. It explores attention, learned salience, uncertain outcomes, infinite continuation, stopping cues, passive absorption, and the way memory reconstructs an interval. The answer is more complicated than “dopamine” or “phones are addictive.” Time does not literally disappear. But the boundaries that help us notice and remember it can become difficult to see.
