50 years since the Soweto Uprising
Today marks exactly 50 years since the Soweto Uprising, one of the most significant moments in South African history. The student-led revolt began as a peaceful march by thousands of black schoolchildren protesting the use of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction. Police opened fire on the crowd, killing hundreds and sparking months of nationwide unrest. Arabile Gumede has more.
