Conmemoraciones - Lázaro Cárdenas, el legado

Mexican President Lázaro Cárdenas, born in Michoacán in 1895, participated in the Revolution from a very young age, alongside Emiliano Zapata, then Venustiano Carranza, and finally Plutarco Elías Calles. Although Cárdenas was Calles's military and political ally, he expelled him from the country when the Michoacán native became president. Former President Calles had managed to achieve great preeminence, to the point that he established himself as the "maximum leader" of the Revolution, imposed two presidents (Ortiz Rubio and Abelardo Rodríguez), founded and controlled the new unified political party, and even attempted to control Cárdenas. When Lázaro Cárdenas ousted Calles from the country, he ended the former president's political dominance, put an end to violent caudillismo, and ushered in a moderate presidential system that would dominate Mexico for the remainder of the 20th century. In the first Six-Year Plan in our history, proposed by Cárdenas, the presidential candidate defined social justice as the primary objective of government action and toured the country like no one had done before. As president, he intensified the Agrarian Reform and the organization and mobilization of workers, public health and education for all, and created the National Polytechnic Institute. Since the beginning of Cardenas's administration, hundreds of strikes took place in Mexico, as the situation of workers had practically not changed, and the oil conflict descended into crisis. Cárdenas upheld the 1917 Constitution, which established that the wealth of the subsoil belonged to the nation, something his predecessors had failed to achieve. He took advantage of the arrogant attitude of the foreign and concessioned oil companies, which refused to accede to the demands of Mexican workers and comply with the government's decision to grant them wage increases, and decreed the expropriation of the oil companies in 1938. His measure enjoyed enormous popular support and serious opposition from the companies—which Cárdenas skillfully managed—and they ultimately had to acknowledge that their tenure in Mexico was over. This was even more so when the US government, faced with the imminence of World War II, found it necessary to acknowledge that Mexico was right in this decision. Cárdenas was able to propose his presidential successor (and this had enormous power, and was established with each of the following presidents of the century). To this end, he selected a moderate, General Manuel Ávila Camacho, who was less inclined than he was to primarily favor peasants and workers. The new president gave Cárdenas very important military positions during Mexico's participation in World War II, after which he was given the responsibility of promoting the development of two very important hydraulic areas. Lázaro Cárdenas was always in contact with social movements and their leaders. He died in 1970 at the age of 75. The theme that always ran through President Cárdenas's policies was social and economic justice. He sought to address the problem of injustice in our country, and he partially succeeded. His work and his life continue to inspire and encourage different Mexicans in this struggle. But there is still much to be done, much to be done, much to be done, there is no doubt.
