The reason I chose to become a surfing coach in the first place was because I wanted to help people who want to enjoy surfing more by "doing the take-off for them." Having taught surfing for over 30 years, I still believe that the most important technique is the take-off. You might think that if you can't take off, you can't start surfing, so just get buoyancy and you'll be able to ride the wave right away? That's one way of thinking, but I don't think surfing is about fixing the board in place. As long as you're in the ocean, you want to enjoy the act of riding the waves. That means that being able to ride various boards, from body surfing (surfing using only your body without a board) to longboards and funboards, depending on the wave, expands the enjoyment of surfing. I myself enjoy surfing on various boards, from bodyboards to longboards, but the foundation of that is the "technique to take off on any board."
