REMOTEWORDS # 21: Interview José Eduardo Agualusa

REMOTEWORDS # 21: José Eduardo Agualusa: "I dream of the day on which border policemen begin to build bridges." The words LISBOAFRICA by José Eduardo Agualusa, Angolean writer and journalist, were applied to the roof of the LX Factory in Lisbon in collaboration with the Dutch art organization "NOORDKAAP". His message refers to the Portuguese language's cultural roots in Africa, as well as in South America and Europe. REMOTEWORDS is a long-term artistic project that disseminates communications installed on roofs worldwide through virtual globes such as Google Earth.
The messages are permanently applied to the roofs in the form of capital letters. The location and the message conceptually represent a semantic unit. REMOTEWORDS was established 2007 in Cologne, Germany. Foundation Noordkaap is an art initiative from the Netherlands, currently on tour through Europe with a growing exhibition project. The program of Noordkaap examines the influence of populist movements on European society. How do countries deal with the rise of Populism? How do citizens react to Populism? And how do international artists relate to this topic? Artists are invited to respond to local phenomena and current social developments. Next to showing artistic works, Noordkaap makes interviews with artists, curators, journalists, philosophers and social researchers on location.
