Ueda City, known as the "Silk Capital," once had both silk reeling factories and spinning mills. While materials on silk reeling factories can be seen in museums and other institutions, opportunities to see spinning mills are less common. At Shinshu University's Faculty of Textile Science, spinning operations are still carried out using large machines imported from overseas 115 years ago. These machines, partly made of wood and operating with a loud, bold noise, clearly demonstrate the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the people of that time, making them fascinating and endearing in themselves. Mr. Hayashi's hands, skillfully operating these historically valuable machines to produce beautiful and delicate spun yarn, are those of a true professional. Looking at photographs of students from that era, I felt the long history that began with the government-run Ueda Sericultural College. The students of Ueda supported Japan's core industry and built the foundation of modern Japan.
