This film is the second installment of "Toei Movie x Stage," a project launched by Toei and Toei Video to fully link film and stage productions. Suzuki stars in the film version, while Tsubasa Sakiyama stars in the stage version. Genshiro Kusaka (Suzuki), who runs a detective agency in Edo, is the son of a renowned puppeteer who served the Toyotomi family. He is also a "Shinigami Tsukai" (Shinigami's messenger), under contract with the Grim Reaper, Juran (Kentaro Yasui), and becomes involved in a series of murders of courtesans in the Yoshiwara pleasure district. The stage version features Shinnosuke Shoji (Tsubasa Sakiyama), the leader of a gang whose father is the head of the Yoshiwara pleasure district, and the Grim Reaper, Juran, wreaking havoc.
