The latest attack took place on Wednesday (July 15, 2026), at approximately 6:00 a.m. local time. This operation marks a renewed escalation of the conflict between Washington and Tehran. The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the attack was focused on weakening Iran's military capabilities in strategic sea lanes. The primary target was a force Iran allegedly uses to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. According to CENTCOM, the operation aimed to maintain the security of international shipping lanes. Meanwhile, Iranian media reported that the attack hit the port city of Bushehr. Citing Al Arabiya, Bushehr is known to be the location of Iran's only civilian nuclear power plant. In addition to Bushehr, explosions were also reported in Bandar Abbas, Qeshm Island, and Imam Khomeini Airport. This wave of attacks comes almost a month after the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding in Islamabad last June. The agreement was expected to be the first step towards ending the conflict that has been ongoing since February. However, the situation has escalated again even though the negotiations have not yet officially concluded. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi accused the US of undermining peace efforts. He said the new blockade imposed by Washington has undermined the contents of the memorandum of understanding. The struggle for control of the Strait of Hormuz is said to be the main trigger for the renewed tensions. Amid the escalating conflict, US President Donald Trump has again issued threats against Iran. Trump warned that he would expand the target of attacks to civilian infrastructure if Tehran refused to return to negotiations. He even stated that the situation would become much worse for Iran in the near future. However, Trump canceled plans to impose a 20 percent fee on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
