The King of All the Undertakers Built a $30K-a-Day Drug Empire and Changed Federal Law

Eddie “Hi-Neef” Richardson was known as the King of All the Undertakers — the leader of Chicago’s Undertaker Vice Lords. From Congress and Cicero on the West Side, his organization grew into a five-generation drug empire that witnesses said generated up to $30,000 a day. But Richardson’s story did not end with a life sentence. In 1999, he took his case to the U.S. Supreme Court — and won. The ruling in Richardson v. United States changed federal criminal law, but it did not set him free. This is the story of the Undertaker Vice Lords, Cicero Avenue, the Eisenhower Expressway, and the man who built a system that outlived him.
