This Country Tried To Break Us | GREECE | London to Singapore Overland EP11

We're in our 50s, driving a Land Rover Defender 110 from London to Singapore — and Greece did not make leaving Europe easy. We arrived at Meteora in a thunderstorm, found a wild camp in the dark, and woke up to one of the most extraordinary views of the entire expedition. The monasteries perched on their rocks in the morning light made the previous night's chaos completely worth it. Then Mount Olympus. We drove up as far as the road allowed — which turned out to be further than it should have been. Snow-lined drops, a road that kept getting narrower, and eventually a moment where we looked at each other and knew we had to reverse back down. Half an hour of reversing on a mountain road with steep drops either side. Not our most comfortable afternoon. We found a wild camp that night in another thunderstorm. Then wild dogs. Then five failed attempts at finding a decent camp the following evening before we finally got it right. When we did — a beach camp on the coast with the Defender parked at the water's edge — we stayed for two days and didn't want to leave. Along the way: a montage through Aigai and Thessaloniki, a chance encounter with a New Zealander driving a 1930s Model A Ford to Nepal, a storm that came out of nowhere and brought trees down around us, and a last meal in Europe knowing Turkey was waiting on the other side of the morning.
