Cityview Center - Garfield Heights - Shopping Center over a Landfill

City View Center in Cleveland. One of the many stops I'll make on a East coast trip I decided to do. The interesting and disastrous story behind this strip mall is that it was actually built on top of a landfill. And building anything on top of a landfill usually leads to unfavorable results. The strip mall used to consist of: Walmart, Giant Eagle, Circuit City, Pet Smart, OfficeMax, Jo-Ann Fabrics, Dicks Sporting Goods, Bed Bath and Beyond and a AJ Wright With Giant Eagle being the only store currently existing still. Over time the pavement began to erode and sink all around the shopping center and methane gases from the landfill below started to rise and leak into the store above. Causing shoppers and employees to get sick. Overtime many attempts were made to keep the place afloat. Pouring more pavement to reach the stairways in the back of the stores. Pipes and vents to get rid of the methane. It was all doomed to fail. With most of the tenants closing down and leaving. Leaving only Giant Eagle. You would think that would be the end of the story for Cityview. I arrive anticipating a run down parking lot and ruined storefronts. Only shocked to find out that they are actually repurposing the buildings and even have remodeled the abandoned Walmart into future use. Absolutely insane. That's how it goes with greed though...
