Rescue 111: The Crew Who Gave It All, So Others May Live.
On the night of July 1st, 1999, Rescue 111: an Irish Air Corps Dauphin helicopter, was returning from a successful Search and Rescue mission when tragedy struck at Tramore, Co. Waterford. After two attempted landings in deteriorating weather, the crew began a coastal approach. In the darkness and dense fog, Rescue 111 impacted the dunes at Tramore Strand, leading to one of the most devastating losses in Irish SAR history up to that point. It was the first incident of its type in the country of Ireland. This documentary tells the story of that night: the mission, the crash, the discovery nobody hoped to make, and the four crew members who gave everything so others might live. Crew of Rescue 111: • Captain Dave O’Flaherty – Aircraft Commander • Captain Michael “Mick” Baker – Co‑Pilot • Sergeant Patrick “Paddy” Mooney – Winch Operator • Corporal Niall Byrne – Winchman These men were husbands, fathers, sons, brothers, partners, and friends. Their dedication to saving lives left a legacy that continues to shape Irish Search and Rescue operations today. 00:00 - Introduction of Rescue 111 to Waterford 01:47 - The Call to Action 03:29 - The Second Call: Indecision 05:12 - The Rescue at Black Rock 06:55 - They Were Heading Home 13:03 - The Discovery They Hoped They Wouldn't Make
