The First Cemetery of Athens (Greek: Πρώτο Νεκροφείο Αθηνών) is the oldest functioning necropolis in modern Athens, a monumental open-air museum. It opened in 1837, shortly after Athens became the capital of independent Greece. The necropolis is located in the central part of the city, at the end of Anapafseos Street (Street of Eternal Peace), immediately behind the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the stadium. Architecture and Atmosphere A Green Oasis: The area resembles a quiet park. Tall cypresses, pines, olive trees, and citrus fruits provide shade. Pendelian Marble: Almost all the tombstones, crypts, and mausoleums are made of the famous snow-white marble from Mount Pendelis, the same one used to build the Parthenon. The finest 19th- and 20th-century masters, especially artisans from Tinos, contributed to the creation of these monuments. Style: Classicism and neoclassicism predominate. Many crypts are built as miniature copies of ancient Greek temples with columns and porticoes. Famous Sculptural Masterpieces "Sleeping Girl" (I Koimemeni): The most famous tombstone in the necropolis marks the grave of 18-year-old Sophia Afentaki. The masterpiece was created by the great Greek sculptor Yannoulis Chalepas. The sculpture depicts a young girl sleeping peacefully on a couch, holding a cross in her hand. Mausoleum of Heinrich Schliemann: The tomb of the famous archaeologist who discovered Troy. Designed by architect Ernst Ziller, it is a majestic neoclassical temple decorated with a frieze depicting scenes from Homer's Iliad and bas-reliefs of excavations. Religious buildings: The site contains three Orthodox churches, the main one being the Church of Saint Theodore. Separate historical sites are also designated for the Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish communities. Historical significance The necropolis is the most prestigious burial site in the country. It is the final resting place of Greece's elite: heroes of the 1821 Revolution, prime ministers, prominent poets (Giorgos Seferis), musicians, architects, and actors (Melina Mercouri). Admission to the site is completely free for all visitors.
