Presentation of the Conference The anniversaries of significant cultural events, such as the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Institución Libre de Enseñanza in Spain, which we celebrated in 2026, serve a dual purpose. They allow us, on the one hand, to celebrate and appreciate their achievements over time and, on the other, to critically review these figures or events and assess what time has done to them, to what extent it has improved and enhanced them, or diminished and diminished them. The Institución Libre de Enseñanza (Free Institution of Teaching) originated with Julián Sanz del Río from Soria and his reception and cultural adaptation of Krause's thought, which brought about a profound revolution in Spanish education and morality. At this congress, we will examine the scope of this renewal of pedagogical, mental, and moral attitudes. Furthermore, in light of the current crisis in our world and our country, we will focus on the fundamental value of the harmonious rationalism and anthropological optimism of Krausist ideology, which conceived of the world and humankind as a direct emanation of God while simultaneously distancing itself from the notion of sin, and understood human perfection as something historical and collective, not merely individual and transcendent. To this end, we will reflect on the validity of Sanz del Río's philosophical choice, the great legacy of the Institución Libre de Enseñanza (Free Institution of Teaching), and on the extent to which, as always happens with idealisms, Krausism tended to subordinate matter and the positivity of facts to the totalizing demands of reason, with the risk of deriving from a dogmatism that ends up prevailing over troublesome empirical limitations.
