Bangladesh Buys China’s J-10CE Fighter Jets | Is India Facing a New Strategic Challenge in the East?

Bangladesh is reportedly preparing to acquire 24 Chinese J-10CE fighter jets in a deal worth nearly $2.2 billion. The aircraft, which Pakistan also operates and reportedly deployed during Operation Sindoor, would mark the biggest leap in Bangladesh Air Force capabilities in decades. The move comes at a time when Dhaka is expanding its strategic engagement with Beijing through infrastructure, investment and defence cooperation. Alongside the fighter deal, Bangladesh is also modernising the Lalmonirhat airbase near the Indian border, adding a new dimension to regional security calculations. While India and Bangladesh continue to maintain diplomatic relations and economic cooperation, the growing presence of advanced Chinese military platforms in Bangladesh raises important strategic questions. For New Delhi, the issue is not the immediate military balance. India retains overwhelming air superiority in the eastern sector.
