Passo Stalle / Staller Sattel: Cycling It Alone (The Traffic Light Timing Trick)

Every 2 weeks it is my turn to drive the youth Alta Badia Nordic Biathlon Team van to the Anterselva Olympic biathlon range (Milano-Cortina 2026 venue) for training. While the athletes train with their coaches, I take my bike and ride Passo Stalle / Staller Sattel with an almost empty road. Here is exactly how I do it. The Italian side has a one-way alternating traffic system controlled by traffic lights. Time it right and you get the switchbacks completely to yourself. One important note: do not start the climb on a red light. The road is too narrow and too long to reach the top before cars come from the other direction. You will meet traffic head-on with nowhere to go. Even a late green light is risky — if you start in the last minutes of the green phase, cars will begin descending before you reach the top. How much of the road you can enjoy alone depends entirely on your climbing speed.
