Fall Asleep to the ENTIRE History of The Old North

The Old North—Hen Ogledd in Welsh—was the lost world of the early medieval Brittonic kingdoms that once stretched across northern England and southern Scotland. In the centuries after Rome’s withdrawal, kingdoms like Rheged, Gododdin, Strathclyde, and Elmet flourished, ruled by warrior-kings and celebrated in the oldest surviving poetry of Britain. This was the age of Urien of Rheged, the tragic heroes of Y Gododdin, and a young bard named Taliesin. Caught between encroaching Anglo-Saxon settlers, Pictish rivals, and shifting alliances, these Brittonic realms fought fiercely to preserve their identity. Though eventually absorbed or pushed westward, their culture helped shape the foundations of medieval Wales and Scotland. In this episode, we explore the history, legends, and legacy of the Old North—a forgotten British world where poetry and war walked side by side. #history #ancienthistory #historydocumentary #historyforsleep
