AUSTRONESIAN: INDONESIAN & MALAY

Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together. Indonesian and Malaysian Malay are standardized varieties of the Malay language, officially used in Indonesia (and Timor Leste as a working language) and in Brunei, Malaysia, and Singapore, respectively. While they are generally mutually intelligible, they exhibit noticeable differences in spelling, grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary, influenced by different predominant sources of loanwords. These differences, which can range from mutually unintelligible to closely related, can lead to intercultural conflicts, particularly in higher education. To non-native speakers, the varieties may seem identical, but native speakers can discern distinctions in diction and accent. These differences also impact the broadcasting industry, leading to the use of both Indonesian and Malay subtitles in movies and cable TV to reach a broader audience. This video is created for educational, language awareness, and language preservation purposes. It aims to provide valuable insights and knowledge to viewers, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of different languages and their unique characteristics. By raising awareness about linguistic diversity, the video seeks to foster a greater respect and recognition for various languages, particularly those that are endangered or underrepresented. Additionally, it contributes to the preservation of languages by documenting and sharing linguistic knowledge, thus ensuring that these languages and their cultural heritage are not lost to future generations.
