As the name suggests, a washbasin is often used for cleaning, e.g., body parts (personal hygiene) or objects. Even in ancient times, jugs and bowls existed for washing hands before and after meals. Before domestic plumbing was available, a washbowl was generally used. Hand basins do not have a wide back rim. They usually do not have a molded soap dish, or one is located in a corner on the side. The space for the drain valve is also in a corner, or there is no space for one, so a wall-mounted valve must be used. Hand basins are preferably used where the primary purpose is handwashing and space is limited, especially in restrooms and guest restrooms. Small hand basins with built-in valves, primarily intended for pouring away wastewater, rinsing hands, and flushing small amounts of wastewater, are known in northern Germany as "hand basins." Regular-sized basins have a wide rear rim, sometimes with molded-in soap dishes, and pre-cut, breakable holes (2 to 5) for the inlet fittings. They can be found in bathrooms or toilets, among other places. Double basins are also commonly used in bathrooms, hotel bathrooms, and hospital bathrooms. In commercial washrooms, kindergartens, schools, and other facilities, row basins are usually used, which, due to their shape, are installed directly adjacent to one another. They are often made of more durable, shatter-resistant materials such as ceramic, cast stone, or stainless steel. Basins with spittoons are available specifically for hospitals, dental practices, and even high-end hotels. Sinks with molded wall plates are also used there, which can be integrated into standard hospital tile dimensions. Sinks in public facilities, especially public restrooms or restrooms in football stadiums, should ideally be made of steel rather than fragile porcelain. Such sinks are marketed as vandal-proof. Since the beginning of the 21st century, some manufacturers have been offering sinks with special ceramic surfaces that are very easy to clean (if necessary) thanks to the lotus effect. Recently, solid stone sinks made of either marble or hard stone have been increasingly used in upscale interior design. A certain amount of care and the use of cleaning agents suitable for the respective stone are required.
