V/Line trains at Rockbank during Peak Hour; N Class trains & Vlocities - Melbourne Transport

In this video we visit Rockbank, a station on the Ballarat Line in Melbourne's western suburbs. We visit the station during the afternoon peak recorded between 4:45pm - 7pm in December 2022. We see the usual variety of V/Line Vlocity trains including some passing the station at speed up to 160km/h, but we also see N Class locomotive-hauled trains with H Set carriages on commuter services to Bacchus Marsh. At the time of filming locomotive-hauled trains to Bacchus Marsh were still relatively common with V/Line running five of these trains in the morning and afternoon peaks. A couple of months after filming they began to be phased out and were finally withdrawn from Bacchus Marsh services in December 2023. The H Set carriages were retired shortly after in February 2024 after running their final service to Waurn Ponds. This video is the last one I have that features the H Set carriages on the Ballarat Line (but not the last overall as I have several more in the backlog). Rockbank station opened on the 2nd April 1884 as Mount Atkinson before being renamed Rockbank in November 1889. The station had always been a quiet station with basic facilities while Rockbank itself was a fairly small town. However Rockbank is in the middle of Melbourne's western growth corridor and particularly over the past decade the surrounding area has sprawled with new estates popping up (particularly north of the station in the Aintree estate). To accommodate this growth and to enable more frequent train services Rockbank station was completely rebuilt into a modern station in conjunction with the duplication of the Ballarat Line between Caroline Springs and Melton.
