While Putin talks about how the Russian economy is doing better than those in Western countries, corporate statistics paint a completely different picture. Two-thirds of Russia's largest corporations have either significantly missed profits or even posted losses since the beginning of the year. This applies not only to the hardest-hit industries, such as oil and gas or coal; profit declines or losses are being recorded in all sectors except banking. Relatively tight monetary policy has brought inflation down, but it's taking a heavy toll on Russian companies. Stock prices are falling again, and defaults are rising. Indebted companies and those operating in the domestic market are particularly hard hit. Meanwhile, two major assets have already been nationalized following lawsuits from the Prosecutor General's Office.
