“Kamakhya” or “Kameshvari” as she is also known is the renowned Goddess of Desire whose shrine is situated in a cave in the heart of the Nilachal Hills in Guwahati, Assam. The Ambubachi Mela is one of the most important festivals across the country and one of the holy festivals of the Kamakya Temple. It is believed that the presiding goddess of the temple, Devi Kamakhya, the Mother Shakti, goes through her annual cycle of menstruation during this time. The Ambubachi Mela has assumed a character of gigantic proportions. The area around the Nilachal Hill does not sleep for a period of about two weeks during the mela.
