Régénération low tech inspirée du castor

Beaver Medicine, Low-Tech Regeneration Inspired by the Beaver 2023 A film about the implementation of the first series of beaver-mimetic structures in the Lierne River (Drôme, France), orchestrated by Cédric Cadet, GEMAPI project manager (Aquatic Environment Management and Flood Prevention) at the Valence Romans Agglo urban community, and Baptiste Morizot, trained by Swift Water Design (builders of PBR BDA structures in California), and fluvial geomorphologist Joe Wheaton. In this deeply incised waterway, the installation of beaver-mimetic structures will revitalize the river by activating a self-regenerating spiral. The objectives are to: reactivate wetlands halt the erosion of the riverbed raise the river channel and the water table reactivate lateral erosion reconnect to the floodplain enrich the watercourse with wood and sediment slow the water flow actively provide habitat for beavers actively provide habitat for species that benefit from different water velocities open the canopy to accommodate pioneer riparian species The materials used are local, natural, and lightweight, and the structures are built by hand. We call this project "Beaver Medicine" because it is through the care of beavers that waterways can regain their health, and ours as well when we imitate them. Since the intervention, the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB 26) has implemented a monitoring protocol: - morphological monitoring with cross-sectional and longitudinal profiles, - monitoring of fish passage through inventory fishing and tagging of individuals (to determine if fish are passing through the dams), - and monitoring of the alluvial aquifer level with the installation of a piezometer. Based on an original idea by Suzanne Husky and Baptiste Morizot Directed by Kevin Simon (www.kevinsimon.fr) This film was produced by L'artothèque - Espace d'art contemporain de Caen in the context of the exhibition: Castor, the River Lover, Leaving His Bed and Tasting the World
