Subaru Crosstrek oil change - all steps explained in detail

We bought this used 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Limited (2.5L engine) a few weeks ago. I will be doing most of the maintenance myself, and will document that work on this channel. Items used : OEM Subaru certified Tokyo Roki oil filter, part number 15208AA21A. Comes with a replacement crush washer for oil pan drain plug. Oil filter will depend on your car's make, model, and year - be sure to verify. Genuine Subaru Certified SAE 0W-20 full synthetic motor oil. The 2.5L engine takes about 4.4 quarts of oil. 17mm socket and short socket extension (about 3 or 4 inches long, for clearance). Torque wrench. Clean plastic funnel for adding oil. Rubber gloves and paper towel to clean around engine. Oil catch pan and cardboard to protect from any dripping onto ground. Spare container to store used oil until it can be brought to a local hazmat disposal facility. Outline : Oil change interval : I choose to do it every 3k miles. Park on a level surface and let the engine cool. Check oil color and level before changing oil to understand oil condition and assess possible oil consumption. Verify that filter and oil cap can be opened by hand. If not, get tools to help remove them safely. Loosen filter and oil cap, Put oil catch pan in place and remove drain plug. It doesn't take long for the oil to drain completely. Remove oil cap and cover it so no debris can accidentally fall in. Remove old oil filter and clean the area where it sits before installing the new oil filter. The filter comes with a rubber gasket installed in it - verify it's in place. Filter should be tightened by hand. Once the oil has finished draining, replace crush washer on drain plug (the flat side sits on the drain plug bolt, the curved side will crush against the oil pan itself when installed) and re-install the drain plug into the oil pan. Tighten the plug by hand, and finish off by torquing to 31 ft-lbs. Add 4 quarts of oil to the engine to begin with, checking oil level to ensure that you don't go over. Close the oil cap. Start the car for a few minutes. Check oil level again, and add more if needed until the correct amount is reached. The engine should take about 4.4 quarts of oil but the exact amount needed will depend on how much came out when drained. Don't just dump the full 5 quarts in - if will overfill. 0:00 - Checking mileage 0:19 - Opening hood 0:32 - Engine layout : locating filter, oil fill port, dipstick, and oil pan drain plug (under car) 0:55 - Checking oil level and color before oil change 1:18 - Which filter and which oil? 2:09 - Verify that filter and oil cap can be opened before draining oil 2:50 - Open oil cap and cover fill port with muslin 3:26 - Draining the oil 4:20 - Inspecting drain plug for signs of metal debris 5:39 - Inspecting air intake filter while waiting for oil to drain 6:07 - Replacing filter 7:35 - Reinstalling drain plug with new crush washer 10:03 - Adding new oil (estimate slightly more than 4 quarts, to correct later) 10:58 - Putting oil cap back on 11:21 - Starting engine and checking for leaks 12:32 - Checking oil level with dipstick 13:13 - Adding more oil to get up to correct level 13:38 - Verifying oil level again 14:02 - Shutting the hood 14:10 - Cleanup
