This one is about Garzone chromaticism. A few weeks ago, we talked about how to start practicing chromaticism. Now, we'll introduce a specific framework to improvise with a very chromatic sound. George Garzone came up with the chromatic and triadic chromatic concepts, which we'll explore here. The triadic approach has you stringing triad pairs that are a half step apart. We will see just how to practice this to get the most out of it. The chromatic approach just has you playing notes within a major third interval to produce a chromatic sound. We can combine those two strategies to build lines that are chromatic and have a very specific sound. We can't sound like this all the time (or it would be weird!) but it is a great tool and framework for producing fresh improv lines. Finally, this is also an excellent ear training exercise -- the triadic concept in particular. You have to be able to hear the chord tones and then choose the direction of your next triad. You'll see what I mean! See if you can use this lesson to wrap your ear and mind around some new lines and sounds. Enjoy!
