When minimum unit pricing was repealed: The Northern Territory experience

About this webinar: This webinar presents early findings on the impacts of repealing the Northern Territory’s Minimum Unit Price (MUP) policy on alcohol pricing. Drawing on data collected from major alcohol retailers before and after the repeal in March 2025, the webinar examines changes in the availability of cheap alcohol products and shifts in alcohol price distributions across the alcohol market. As the first known repeal of an implemented MUP policy worldwide, the NT provides a unique opportunity to understand how alcohol markets respond following the removal of a population-level pricing intervention. The webinar also discusses implications for alcohol policy and harm minimisation in the NT and internationally. About the speaker: Dr Mia Miller is a Research Fellow at NDARC, UNSW Sydney. She was awarded her PhD in November 2025, for which she undertook a mixed-methods program of research examining alcohol consumption among midlife women. Her current research program focuses on alcohol policy, alcohol epidemiology, and alcohol consumption and harms among young people. She is the Research Fellow on the MRFF-funded IMPACT study, a longitudinal cohort of Australian adolescents currently being set up to investigate the impacts of the availability and marketing of alcohol on consumption, and mental and physical health outcomes. Prior to her academic appointments, she worked at the National Health and Medical Research Council and the Commonwealth Department of Health, Disability and Ageing.
