To do this, simply choose a species that produces the right flowers for this bird to come to your home. Come choose your plant from this list prepared by our gardener Carol Costa! Ixora likes sun and can be pruned to produce more flowers. If you don't want to use scissors, choose heliconia, a plant that thrives even in salty areas. A garden classic, the yellow shrimp plant shares space with its sisters of other colors: pink, white, and red. There's a plant that could be confused with one of the shrimp plants above, but don't be fooled: the coral afelandra is from a different family, but equally loved by hummingbirds. If you want plants that flower even in very hot places, you've come to the right place. Carol recorded this video directly from Pernambuco, in the greenhouses of Atmosphera Plantas & Paisagismo, the largest producer of ornamental plants in northern and northeastern Brazil. Mussaenda has a white or pink covering, depending on the variety, but its true flower is small and pink. Crossandra can handle sun and heat. Two shrubs that like sun but prefer cooler temperatures (sun and heat are different things): hydrangea, which changes flower colors depending on the pH of the substrate, and silver rain, with lilac flowers and foliage in a hue that justifies its name. Three native species for you! Red tassel blooms with flowers when pruned and grows well even in windy, salty areas—it easily reaches 3 meters in height. Blue sage is edible and is a PANC (National Health Insurance Company). A short plant that thrives in partial shade and still attracts hummingbirds is the black begonia. Lacking space at home? Small succulents do attract hummingbirds! Of course, the plant needs to have a flowering stem, as Carol shows in the video. Many species produce delicate flowers on a long stem to attract the attention of pollinators up high. The small lantana, like the maria-sem-vergonha or beijinho, attracts not only small weevils but also butterflies. Another suggestion is the mini-alamanda, but don't confuse it with the larger Allamanda cathartica. The russelia thrives in shade and partial shade and is wind-resistant, as long as it receives plenty of water in the substrate. For those with space and looking to cover walls and fences, spring is a great option. Atmosphera has a variety with a bract with a beautiful gradient of white and pink. The odontonema is quickly gaining ground and is swarming with hummingbirds! Another big one is the sanchezia, which is beautiful even without flowers, as its foliage is beautifully designed. The Chinese hat, or mandarin hat, will be a hit with birds and is worth seeking out. The erect thunbergia is a variety with white leaves, unlike the traditional blue. Finally, three mini trees: the garden ipê has beautiful yellow flowers. The garden flamboyant may be intimidating by its name, but it doesn't grow as large as its traditional relative – only the name and the flower remind us of Delonix regia, the large flamboyant we know well. As the name suggests, the garden flamboyant is completely safe and doesn't require a garden to grow. Finally, the oleander also has a small size, and its lilac, white, or pink flowers will attract hummingbirds.
