The first quarter looked promising for the young Hawkeyes against the mighty Irish, but the inexperience of 10 sophomores started to catch up. The Notre Dame offense was hard to stop, amassing a school record 35 first downs and gaining 587 yards. Denny Green scored 2 TDs for the Hawks. Al Bream caught 4 passes for 106 yards.
