Game 3: 2023 World Chess Championship | Nepomniachtchi vs Ding

Featured is Game 3 between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren from the 2023 World Chess Championship match. Magnus Carlsen, in July of 2022, decided not to defend his title. Ding Liren, expecting Nepomniachtchi’s main weapon e4, was surprised by 1.d4. The opening was a Queen’s Gambit Declined, Exchange variation and continued along a path Ding Liren was certainly familiar with. In May of 2022, Ding Liren played as black against Anish Giri and we follow that very game until Nepomniachtchi deviates on move 17. By move 21, Ding Liren already felt as though he was playing for a win. Going into Game 3, Nepomniachtchi lead 1.5 points to 0.5 points. The 2023 World Chess Championship is a best of 14-game match being played in Astana, Kazakhstan. The first player to earn 7.5 points will receive the lion's share (60%) of the approximately $2.2 million prize pool and claim the most prestigious title in chess: 'World Chess Champion'.
