The road begins in #Ooty, a prominent tourist destination in the Western Ghats. Ooty is characterised by cool climate, terraced botanical gardens, tea plantations, and colonial architecture. The initial stretch of the route from Ooty includes winding roads through pine forests and valleys, offering panoramic views of the Nilgiri ranges. As the road exits the town, it gradually descends toward Coonoor, another major hill station known for its horticultural significance and military presence. #Coonoor, located at an elevation of around 1,850 metres, is the second-largest hill town in the Nilgiris. It is well known for its tea cultivation, heritage landmarks such as Sim’s Park, and the Wellington military cantonment. The highway passes through the commercial centre of the town before continuing downward. Beyond Coonoor, the route enters a steeper section of the descent, notable for the presence of 36 numbered hairpin bends, which are tightly curved and require cautious navigation, especially in fog or low light. This segment of the road is characterised by thick shola forests, tea estates, narrow bridges, and viewpoints overlooking the plains. Villages such as Burliar and Kallar are located along this section, offering occasional roadside amenities. Due to the rapid descent and orientation, the evening ride features changing light conditions, cooler winds in the upper stretches, and warmer air as the altitude decreases. Fog and mist are common in higher altitudes during evenings, especially between Coonoor and Kallar. The Ooty–Mettupalayam route is paralleled by the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The railway crosses and reappears alongside the road at various points, especially between Kallar and Coonoor, adding visual and historical interest to the journey. The entire stretch forms a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, home to diverse flora and fauna, including occasional sightings of elephants, monkeys, and exotic birds near the roadside, particularly during early mornings and evenings.
