Abolishing Carceral Logics: A New Framework for Understanding Sexual Violence

*** The non-profit organization Sexual Assault Voices of Edmonton (SAVE) started as a group intricately connected to the Edmonton Police Service (EPS). This session will explore how their anti-sexual violence organizing grew and deepened over the years, eventually culminating in a severing of ties with EPS and the launch of a Defund the Police campaign. The presenters will highlight the harms that police-based justice systems inflict upon those who’ve experienced sexual violence. We then offer an alternative framework for understanding the social drivers of sexual violence as well as the larger restorative principles they connect to. Speaker Kenzie Gordon is a social worker and settler scholar at the University of Alberta, on Treaty 6 territory. She is currently completing a doctoral program in Media & Cultural Studies, with an emphasis on representations of gender-based violence in video games.
