It comes from a Jimmy Herring solo that he plays on the tune Augusta's Ankle from the Project Z self titled album. This Lick is based on an awesome but simple concept … an easy way to play "outside" and get some unique sounds. The basic concept is when playing your usual blues or pentatonic riffs … in say A minor Pentatonic … you can slip in and out of C minor Pentatonic and you get some really great "outside" notes. So the brain doesn't have to work much … cuz you're just thinking pentatonic the whole time. Basically you're playing a minor pentatonic scale up a minor third from the original pentatonic scale that you are using. This gives you the b9, #9, b5 and #5 (all the altered "outside" notes) that make for a happy and healthy guitar player to riff on! And there's no need to learn any new scales or patterns … it's all just glorious pentatonic!
