During the struggle, a young girl—his granddaughter—almost ran out to meet them, but was quickly taken inside the house for safety. The officer recounted: "I was about to take my granddaughter home. I went outside to get my car... before I knew it, they were already upon me." The criminals pulled him from the vehicle and threw him to the ground while one of them threatened him with a gun.
