The millennia-long history of Persia (Iran) and Armenia is a succession of periods of peace and war. Borders have shifted throughout the centuries, particularly in northern Iran, which was once part of Greater Armenia. Saint Thaddeus and Saint Stephen stand in the northern mountains. These monasteries are true treasures of Armenian spiritual and artistic heritage. These two churches and their associated buildings are among the most beautiful monastic complexes in the world. They are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Church of the Holy Saviour, known as "the Vank" (monastery), in the Armenian quarter of Isfahan (central Iran), is a marvel of the integration of Western and Persian influences into Armenian art. It is one of the expressions of the richness and vitality of those Armenians who were deported from northern Persia by Shah Abbas I in the 17th century. These three monasteries are treasures of history, faith, and the virtuosity of Armenian art through the centuries. With the participation of Patrick Donabedian and Claude Mutafian, historians
