Link to Checklist: http://miguelsgarage.com/downloads/ The Mazda Miata, officially known as the MX-5, has long been a beloved icon in the car world, and the 2005-2014 models, also known as the NC generation, perfectly uphold that legacy, with a BIG smile. This version marks a slight evolution from its predecessors, offering more comfort (especially for taller guys) and a bit more power, while still capturing the spirit of lightweight, driver-focused fun. Here’s what makes the NC Miata a standout and why it’s loved by car enthusiasts worldwide. The 2.0-liter inline-4 engine puts out around 167 horsepower (slightly less if you opt for the automatic… in which case YOU DESERVE IT!), although it might not sound like a lot, but when you’re in a car that weighs around 2,500 pounds, it still can be a lot of fun. Common Issues: 1. Soft Top Wear and Tear The fabric soft top on the MX-5 can wear out over time, especially at folding points, leading to leaks and tears. Some owners report accelerated wear where the top meets the frame. A replacement top can average $1400 to $1500 dollars including labor. If you buy a quality replacement like a Robbins Auto Convertible top, the price goes up to about $2500 2. Rust Rust, especially in areas prone to moisture such as the rear wheel arches and underbody, is a known issue for MX-5 models in climates with heavy rainfall or snow. Rust often appears on the sills and subframes. 3. Transmission Issues (Manual) Some owners of 6-speed manual models have reported issues with gear grinding, particularly in the 2nd gear. This is usually caused by novice drivers grinding the gears The transmission fluid often needs to be checked and replaced more frequently than suggested in the manual. 4. Cooling System Problems The cooling system, particularly the radiator and hoses, can develop leaks over time. The water pump has also been known to fail at higher mileages. The coolant expansion tank can become brittle overtime 5. Clutch Wear Due to the sporty nature of the MX-5, the clutch may wear out faster, particularly for drivers who engage in more aggressive driving or track days. Clutch pedal adjustment issues have also been reported by some owners. 6. Suspension Bushing Wear Suspension bushings, especially in the rear, can wear out over time, leading to clunking noises or poor handling. Replacing the bushings or upgrading to aftermarket versions is common. 7. Differential Issues Owners have reported noise and premature wear from the rear differential, particularly in models that have seen heavy use. 8. Oil Leaks Engine oil leaks, particularly from the valve cover gasket, are common as the car ages. Some owners have also reported leaks from the oil cooler lines. 9. Headlight Lens Fogging Over time, the headlight lenses can fog up or yellow, reducing light output and requiring cleaning or replacement. Recalls: The best option to find out recall information is to go to your manufacturer’s website link below www.mazdarecallinfo.com In the U.S., you can also visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The link is also included below. https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls For either option, enter the vehicle’s 17 character VIN # and this will provide you with a list of recalls for the vehicle you are looking into.
