Père-Lachaise receives approximately 2 million visitors per year, making it one of the most visited sites in Paris after the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and Notre-Dame. It has been listed as a Historical Monument since 1993. It is the largest cemetery within the city limits of Paris, covering 43 hectares and containing approximately 69,000 graves. It was established in 1804 on land that had long belonged to the Jesuits and where Père Lachaise, confessor to Louis XIV, resided at the end of his life. At that time, it contained only 13 graves, as the site was not popular with Parisians, the neighborhood being considered too working-class and poor. To attract more residents for their final resting place, the remains of famous figures such as Héloïse and Abélard, Molière, and La Fontaine were transferred to Père-Lachaise. The marketing campaign was a success, as by 1830, there were already 33,000 graves, and it became the cemetery of choice for the aristocracy.
