European Rewilding Network | Rewilding Intro | Saving Wildcats

Every few months, the European Rewilding Network (ERN) hosts online ‘Rewilding Intro’ events: a mini-webinar series through which ERN initiatives share their #rewilding success stories. This time our member Saving Wildcats took us on a journey to Scotland to learn about their work to prevent the extinction of wildcats by breeding and releasing them into the wild in the Scottish Highlands. The plight of Scotland’s wildcat is a long and complicated one, with persecution, habitat loss, lack of legal protection, disease and hybridisation with domestic cats. Saving Wildcats is breeding wildcats for release at a new dedicated centre based at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s Highland Wildlife Park. This summer, the first 19 European wildcats were released into the wild within Cairngorms National Park. As Rewilding Europe we were proud to support these reintroductions through our European Wildlife Comeback Fund. We welcomed Dr Helen Senn, Head of Conservation & Science Programmes at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, who presents on the extensive work being done by Saving Wildcats to prevent the extinction of this iconic species in Scotland.
