We don’t always love rehearsing it. But in the end: we love it because this is one big reason we are attracted to this music – the sophisticated, compelling chords and chord voicings that awaken our ears! It can be a pretty serious challenge for a developing vocal group or jazz choir to get comfortable singing arrangements with a lot of dissonant intervals like half steps or major 7ths between parts. Sometimes the dissonance is a bit disguised – it can sound like a relatively simple, pretty chord to the listener. But in the trenches, for the singers – a dissonant voicing may not be intuitive to sing, especially for the voice parts responsible to sing the involved notes. In this session we’re going to take a close look at the two primary instances were we find dissonance in jazz choir literature: 1. Half step between adjacent parts, and 2. A major 7th between any two parts Also in this session we’ll talk about strategies for ‘solving’ dissonance through education, prep and vocal approach.
